Secularization of knowledge in the Islamic world

A lethargy afflicted the Islamic world in the natural sciences since the Mongol invasion, while the emergence of scholars such as (Ghiyas al-Din al-Kashani ) and (Baha al-Din al-Amili) was an exceptional matter. With the emergence of the Safavid state in Iran, sciences were restricted to religion and philosophy, which is similar to what is the state of science in contemporary Islamic countries.

While the entry of modern sciences to Iran and Egypt was in the same time period, during the (Qajari) era 1786-1925 AD, a period that witnessed the entry of (Napoleon) to Egypt, and then later was the stage of scholarships sent to Europe with the efforts of the elites of those countries Islamic countries, as well as the advent of European missions accompanying the military invasions to Muslim countries. The stage of Arabization of foreign texts began.

We can distinguish three reactions to this scientific modernity. There are those who welcomed it and considered it to contribute to the benefit of Muslim countries, such as (Rashid Rida) and (Muhammad Abdo), as well as (Jamal al-Din al-Afghani), who criticized those who oppose the benefit of these sciences from those who considered them Frankish sciences. Contrasting Muslim sciences, while the third party was represented by those that tried to abolish Islamic culture completely and called for the Westernization of society and its Franks, such as the writers who were preoccupied with Egypt in that era and who tried to appear as enlightened, and among those group were (Al-Tahtawi), (Ali Abdel Razek) and (Qasim) Amin), (Taha Hussein) and (Khaled Muhammad Khalid). Perhaps many Arab Christians were closer to this method of Westernization, such as (Shibli Shamil), (Jerji Zaidan) and (Salama Musa), and the latter, who was alienated from the East in general, called for replacing Arabic letters with Latin letters.

But some of these preachers of Westernization and fascinated by its curricula retreated at the end of their lives from some of their positions, so they decided that many of their claims were incomplete, as in the (Taha Hussein) omission of some of the historical errors and inaccuracies written, or the comments written by (Ali Abdel Razek) On one of Ahmed Amin’s articles, where he saw that some of his previous words came by force.

(Zaki Najib Mahmoud) was one of the most prominent advocates of positivist philosophy in the Arab world, in which he called for the adoption of sense as a basic reference in knowledge and the rejection of what the ancestors were upon to rely on revelation. In India, Sir Ahmed Khan appeared, who established a university there and considered that the reason for the backwardness of Muslims was in their reliance on the unseen, which he considered myths, and in their commitment to transmission. He also considered the British occupation of India one of the most wonderful phenomena in the world! . Prior to the emergence of the (the conditional) movement in Iran, a movement began calling for the Westernization of the way of life there in the name of enlightenment, while (Mirza Malkam Khan) believed that westernization does not take place with an independent Islamic creative approach, but rather by complete imitation of the West, and also called for granting privileges to foreign companies and bringing in administrations from the West. . The likes of (Akhundzadeh) and (Taqizadeh) saw that religious beliefs weaken peoples and that imitation of the West should be in form and content.

In the face of this Western current that tried to break away from its Islamic culture, another current grew that tried to establish an Islamic culture based on the principle of understanding between religious texts and narratives and between modern science, such as saying that the Qur’an and the Sunnah predicted many modern sciences, as in Sheikh Muhammad Abdo’s vision of microbes as a type From the jinn when it came from a hadith about the fact that some diseases are from the prick of the jinn, while others believed that the Qur’an discovered satellites, radio, television, and rays X ) before modern science. However, some Islamic researchers, such as Dr. (Mahdi Kalashni,[1] ) He sees that this conciliatory approach takes metaphysics completely and refers it to the limitations of the natural world, and thus it robs the Qur’an of the doctrinal rulership.

This trend influenced by Western thought paved the way for the emergence of Marxism in the Islamic world, as the roots of these two types of Westernization lie in the sensual tendency that modern science brought through its techniques and concepts to the lands of Islam. In fact, the science that found its way to us did not provide us with its scientific data for free, but it also came with positive thought that strips the unseen of its value and insists on neglecting religion. Also, the scholars – although they did not seem to have any tendency towards philosophical transformations – were in fact influenced by the positivist trend in philosophy, which restricted scientific value to empirical science only. And between the requirements of that dangerous philosophy, which basically led to the formation of the phenomenon of the absence of the element of originality in ideas. And then it came to some thinkers to say that the Islamic method is the same as the experimental method, and that the reason for the backwardness of our countries is the pursuit of philosophy.

And in the midst of its ignorance of the controversy taking place in the Western scientific institutions themselves that produce modern experimental foundations, our scientific institutions and our cultural groups are living a duality in their position on religion, as some tend to exclude them completely from the scientific arena, and others who are still keen on something from religion to deal with The religious and scientific tracks separately, both forgetting or oblivious to the metaphysical reality ruling background on every scientific theory marketed to us, and that natural science is limited by the limits of its narrow space, so it is strange that empirical science has become a limiter and ruler of religion, and this is what a large segment of culture advocates fell into. In the best case, religion is confined to the circle of moral behavior.

Many Western scholars have realized the inability of science, when it is devoid of religion, to secure the happiness of mankind, and they have noticed that it creates multiple crises, but what is unfortunate is that this global trend has not yet reached our cultural and scientific circles, although some of them take the West as a beacon and qiblah. Despite the decline in the exaggeration in science on the western level, we still see some of our intellectuals calling for joining the ranks of science as the only way to renaissance and offering promises of great opportunities provided by our complete openness to modern knowledge.
