هذه الآلهة كانت – بحسب الأساطير المصرية – اخت وزوجة الاله اوزيريس في الوقت عينه ، وهذا ما يفسّر ظاهرة زواج المحارم داخل العائلة المالكة الفرعونية ، والتي كانت معتادة للحفاظ على نقاء الدم الملكي . كذلك تمتعت هذه الآلهة بقدرات سحرية خاصة وكبيرة ، كانت مهمة في احياء روح زوجها اوزيريس ، ومن ثمّ حملها منه بابنهما الاله حورس ، الذي قاد معركة العرش ضد عمه ست ، وانتصر عليه بمساعدة أمه إيزيس .
كما يبدو انّ أصل اسمها في اللغة المصرية القديمة ( سيّدة العرش ) ، وهذا ما يشير اليه ايضا بحسب الظاهر التاج الشبيه بالعرش على رأسها . وقد رمز المصريون لها بامرأة ذات قرنين بينهما قرص الشمس ، وهي رمزية عالية في الأدب الديني المصري القديم . لكنّ الملفت انها أخذت أيضاً اشكالاً مختلفة تمظهرت من خلالها حسب الاثار المصرية . أمّا الظاهرة الاغرب فهي انتشار عبادتها في الحضارتين اليونانية والرومانية ، ومن خلالهما داخل القارّة الأوربية .
